The Famicom Disk System is a floppy-based add-on created by Nintendo R&D2 with engineering support from Ricoh, enabling cheap rewritable disk media, onboard RAM Adapter saving, and enhanced audio channels; it premiered exclusively in Japan on February 21 1986, received kiosk distribution throughout 1986-1987, and saw limited exports only via import shops, making its library a distinctly Japanese chapter of the NES era.
